Te Timatanga, Auckland Prides opening show. Picured here is Pounamu Rurawhe, after her live performance at the Civiv Wintergarden, her friends and family gifted her some beautiful taonga, which was recieved with a hōngi. The performance portrayed the significance of Tangata Whenua, namely Takatāpui and their relationships with their tapuna. Outlining the importance of their wisdom, and how the passing down of that wisdom shapes our identity, and our relationship with our environments.

“Ko au te whenua, ko te whenua ko au – I am the land and the land is me.”

Te Tīmatanga is a new work grounded in te ao Māori, intertwining dance, performance art, circus, kapa haka, taonga pūoro, and ritual into an unforgettable night. Featuring Rosanna Raymond and Pounamu Rurawhe, and supported by Kirianna Sheree, Ariana Tikao, Te Kīra Whakamoe, and Whiro Walker.

This immersive performance experience sees art move throughout the Wintergarden space. Traditional conventions of audience and performer are disrupted and reimagined. We are beckoned by Muri-ranga-whenua to a liminal place — where tangata (people) and whenua (land) dissolve into one.

Embracing the interconnectedness of person and place, the work transcends binaries through ritual exchange. This ancestral knowledge is passed from kuia to mokopuna, from past to present — weaving a reciprocal relationship through the tending and nourishing of our wahine.
